CHAPTER ELEVEN … The good neighbor

Candace Parker’s day started much calmer than Ramona’s day did. She still couldn’t believe that she’d agreed to spirit Tracey’s little boy to Alberta Johnston’s home in the god-awful predawn. How was it possible that forty-eight hours ago, she didn’t even know a courageous woman named Tracey Sneed or her cute little boy? Tracey Sneed left a lingering impression, even though she and Remy would probably be an item when this mess ended. She slipped into a cab with Kurtis still asleep, nestled against her shoulder. She wondered if Alberta Johnston was as nice as Remy claimed she was on so many occasions. She gave the cabdriver the crumpled piece of paper that Tracey pressed into her hands as she told her to take care of Kurtis and then left before she started to cry.

Candace watched Tracey try to control her emotions when she looked at her little boy. He looked so sweet, sleeping in the large bed, and his mother almost succeeded in holding back the tears. Once Tracey stepped into the hallway where the lighting was better, Candace could see the tears glistening in the corners of her eyes when she asked Candace to take her son to safety. Tracey gave her the name of Kurtis’s biological mother, then made her promise if anything happened to contact the woman and tell her.

She sighed and then covered a yawn with the back of her hand. Jesus! She hadn’t gotten up this early since graduate school. She tried to select classes that started after ten in the morning. Starting after eleven o’clock was even better. It was still so early that the sun just peeked out from the dark early morning sky. She could still see the fading moon when the cab stopped in front of a large ten-story building.

“Hello, Ms. Johnston?” Candace held the sleepy little boy in her arms as she leaned into the stainless steel intercom. She pressed the small silver call button.

“Candace Parker?”

“Yes, Ma’am, that’s me.”

“Hello, Dear, I’m sending my daughter to escort you. She’ll be wearing a police uniform, so don’t be frightened. My daughter is harmless and you can trust her. Her name is Dana Johnston.”

“I’ll wait for her in the lobby. Thank you, Ms. Johnston.” Candace sighed and then smoothed the little boy’s hair. “Well, Kurtis, it looks like we’re gonna have a nice place to stay for few days until your mama returns,” she whispered, kissing the little boy’s forehead.

Mrs. Johnston’s description of Dana omitted how tall and well built she was. Although not as tall she was, Dana looked good in the navy blue uniform of the NYPD. Candace had nearly forgotten how much she loved to see a good-looking woman in uniform until Dana Johnston reminded her. Wow! She had met two great-looking women in less than three days. What were the odds of that happening to her? She hid a tired smile. Chances were at least a million to one, considering the dry spell she’d been having in her social life lately.
